Equine Laminitis: A Revised Pathophysiology

نویسنده

چکیده

Vasodilation precedes the development of carbohydrate overload laminitis. Circulating laminitis trigger factors activate lamellar enzymes, which lyse the attachments between the distal phalanx and the inner hoof wall. The clinical signs of laminitis occur when the lamellar architecture disintegrates. The amount of pain correlates with the extent of lamellar pathology. A substance produced by Streptococcus bovis from the equine hindgut activates lamellar enzymes and causes in vitro laminitis. The S. bovis laminitis trigger factor may be the ‘‘missing link’’ connecting events in the hindgut with the development of laminitis in the foot. Equine obesity: beyond the equine metabolic syndrome

Laminitis is a common and debilitating condition which initially presents as an acutely painful condition of the feet and often warrants euthanasia. The condition has multiple aetiologies but acute pasture-associated laminitis is most frequently encountered and is often recurrent. The incidence and impact of laminitis led to the identification of derangements of carbohydrate and lipid metabolis...

Equine Cushing's disease.

Equine Cushing's disease (ECD) is a chronic progressive disease of the intermediate pituitary gland of older horses. Horses with Cushing's disease often have other health problems, such as laminitis, chronic infections, pseudolactation, and other issues. Diagnosis of ECD is usually based on clinical signs and endocrine tests. Medical management of affected horses is usually a long-term or lifel...

Diabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome in horses.

Analogous to the situation in human medicine, contemporary practices in horse management, which incorporate lengthy periods of physical inactivity coupled with provision of nutritional rations characterized by inappropriately high sugar and starch, have led to obesity being more commonly recognized by practitioners of equine veterinary practice. In many of these cases, obesity is associated wit...

A Review of the Pathophysiology and Treatment of Acute Laminitis: Pathophsiologic and Therapeutic Implications of Endothelin-1

The pathophysiology of acute laminitis remains poorly understood despite substantial scientific investigation over the last 20 yr. Evidence would suggest that ischemic and inflammatory cascades are involved. Evidence from our laboratory suggests that endothelin-1 is involved in the digital microvascular alterations characteristic of acute laminitis. Although current therapies are varied and inc...
